We have a few venues on the tour calendar that brings golf closer to home, most notably The Open, but there’s something lasting and endearing about the annual BMW Championship that takes place at Wentworth Club in Surrey.

Adorned with centuries old oak trees and brilliantly crafted with beautiful water features away from the meticulously cut fairways, the venue is as much fun to talk around as it is to play golf on. That being said, playing the course proved to be less of a leisurely stroll for those players who fell short of the cut over the weekend.

Off the tee

With the Ryder Cup just a few weeks away, we saw the majority of Luke Donald's team tee it up at Wentworth ahead of the biennial showdown at Bethpage Black.

Tommy Fleetwood is a massive fan favourite and made his way around Wentworth this week. Like any huge tour venue, this course has a demanding layout that necessitates accurate, powerful shots off the tee. Wentworth West also has plenty of notoriously challenging holes, including a pair of par-5s to finish that always make for sure fascinating viewing.

Fleetwood trusts the TaylorMade TP5x ball each time he takes to the course, which is a real machine and has been designed to give you excellent distance off the tee. If you’re teeing up your ball on a par-5 or lengthy par 4, this is the model that’ll give you monster distances down the fairway.

From the fairways

A regular tour favourite who made appearance was Rory McIlroy, fresh of his recent victory at the K Club. Rory needed to continue his fantastic iron play to handle all the many slopes and contours that constitute Wentworth West.

Rory most likely played with one of his signature ‘Rors’ stamped TP5 golf balls. This ball features a 5-layer progressive core construction that ensures an excellent sense of feel on all strikes. This is the kind of trusted feel you’ll want in a golf ball when you’re tackling a tricky par-3 like the 2nd hole at Wentworth.

Around the greens

It goes without saying that Championship-level golf courses boast very impressive, multi-tiered greens that can be as deceptive as they are stunning to look at. Top tour pros like Fleetwood have their own approach to putting that will include playing with a ball that looks best to them when they’re standing over the ball.

Fleetwood uses a Pix golf ball, which adds TaylorMade’s unique ClearPath Alignment system to his TP5x. This colourful aid makes it easier to line up your putt when you’re placing the ball on the green and helps the ball’s roll feel more predictable. If you’ve yet to play with balls that have alignment aids, this ball is as solid as they come.
